Most of my followers are oSaC anyway but eh might as well post something about it!

It's been open for a bit and there's only a week left, so if you're interested in post-apocalyptic D&D-style choice-based plot and roleplay with a lot of character customization, take a look!

Edit: Joining extended by another week!

oSaC will be open for joining over the next few weeks! In the aftermath of a recent battle, prisoners with stolen souls have been revived and may join Safe Haven. Details on character creation will be later in this journal, but first here’s a little bit about the group and the sort of experience you’re going to get if you decide to apply.

Introduction to oSaC

oSaC is a gritty choice- and consequence-driven narrative where the actions of the members drive the plot forward. Rather than starring admin characters or NPCs, your character will be crucial to how the plot of each event and the narrative as a whole goes. Admins work diligently to keep track of character arcs and work them into the story to make the experience feel more personal and have a lot of weight. A lot of our character customization mechanics are still in the works, but you’ll be able to work to equip your character with your own items and personalized abilities. No two characters will play the same, even characters that may have similar personalities, and each will be uniquely specialized to function in events and combat. We want characters to feel alive and vibrant and have a lot of capacity to grow, sometimes in new and unexpected ways as they face new trials.

While a member of oSaC, there are many things you will be able to do. General roleplaying will always be allowed, and as new things happen in the world there will be a lot for your characters to explore, both physically and emotionally. Your characters are able to perform their jobs to collect items and build themselves tools, armor and weapons, even enchanting them with unique effects. Depending on your profession, you may even be able to contribute towards the invention of new technologies and alchemical discoveries. Characters will be able to gain new special abilities, and even create their own custom abilities that will be unique to their character. You will be able to participate in challenges to broaden your artistic abilities and try things you maybe haven’t tried before, and earn rewards for your characters in the process. You will be able to participate in large-scale events where your actions will dictate how they play out, and may also be able to participate in tabletop-game-stype quests to tackle new challenges that Haven faces. In the future, you will also be able to customize your character with new feats, raise your stats and skills, and develop your own home and assets that you can use going forward. Our community is very tight-knit and collaborations are very common, characters and players helping each other out through tough situations when it’s needed.

Like any medium, roleplay groups don’t cater to every person in every community. oSaC can be a hard group for people who prefer to have complete control over their character’s narrative, people who struggle with anxiety or have a hard time receiving criticism or consequence. In addition, all of our different stats and mechanics can be hard to keep track of, though our admins and fellow members are always willing to help set you up to keep track of them. There is also a LOT to do, both in downtime and during events, and while extremely high-activity isn’t required, certain people may become demoralized when they realize they don’t have the time or energy to do absolutely everything. Some of our mechanics aren’t finished and may be subject to patches or tweaks, so some flexibility will be required until it’s complete. oSaC will cover a lot of dark material and sensitive topics, so if you have very bad triggers of any kind this may not be the group for you. Finally, as the group is consequence based, your actions might hurt other player characters or even our own, sometimes even resulting in death.

These are difficulties that everyone will face while they’re here, but our community is supportive and fair towards people who are struggling and you’ll never truly have to go at something alone. If you like the sound of this experience and think that it’s something you’re going to enjoy, please see the details of the joining below! We’re excited to meet you and see who you bring into the world.

Joining Information

Eclipse made our journals a little bit messy, but you can find the majority of our lore and mechanics information in our Manual Directory! The navigation buttons on the homepage will also give you some extra info on what the group has to offer.

We do not expect our new members to join with a complete and detailed understanding of all the numbers and different facets of the group, but you should read up on the lore of the world and be prepared to learn mechanics on the fly as soon as you’re accepted. Our community is always willing to help you out if there’s something you don’t understand.

Current members are also welcome to make new characters as a part of this opening!

Your character will join the group as a Solen Soul. After the Calamity, your character spent some time surviving in the Wastes before they were found and slain by a creature called the

Echoer. The monster stole your soul and brought your empty body to its lair, using your life

force to strengthen itself and fight against Haven. Your character will not have any real memories of this time, but will experience it like a long dream, perhaps having spoken to other Stolen Souls but being completely unaware of the world around them, or of time passing. When Haven cats killed the Echoer, your soul was rescued by a Haven cat named Rolo who shared your plight, and you were freed and returned to your body. You slowly revived in the care of Safe Haven’s denizens.

Your character’s name, age, auma type, power class, history and all other information is totally up to you. We have no limits on any rare traits except gigantism and dwarfism, which are both currently closed. For your reference, here’s a quick timeline to help you frame what might have happened to your character and when (more details on exactly what was happening in each of the civilizations before the Calamity can be found in the specific history journals for that civilization).

  • The Calamity happened, destroying the world and wiping out almost all life… except for a few surviving cats who were blessed by the remaining light energies of the world. Your cats gained sentience, true personality, language, and many other features (more information can be found in the Haven Cats journal). Note that before joining Haven, cats do not have powers or abilities.

  • For about 1 year survivors traveled alone or in small groups. Some that tried to set up larger or more permanent groups were wiped out by the monstrous creatures who roam the world.

  • Exactly 1 year after the Calamity, a telepathic Call went out to all cats living in the Ashen Wastes (except those who may have been beyond the current map’s area). This Call told them that there was a sanctuary called Safe Haven where they could find refuge and start to reclaim the world from the monsters. Many cats traveled there, but yours, whether because they were out of range, were incapable, or didn’t want to, did not go to find Haven.

  • In the months that followed, the Ashen hunted survivors more viciously. By 1 year and 10 months after the Calamity, there were so few survivors left, and none were able to survive traveling in groups larger than 2. With not enough resources to go around and cats losing hope and turning Ashen at the drop of a hat, kindness to strangers became extremely dangerous, and larger groups attracted more Ashen. Around this same time, there was a bright light that beamed into the sky on the horizon. Many cats made their way towards it, but yours either did not see it or, for some reason, did not follow it.

  • Your character cannot have survived more than 2 years and 6 months after the Calamity before being slain by the Echoer.

  • The current time is 3 years after the Calamity.

The Echoer

Your character can have survived in the wastes for any amount of time as long as it is in accordance with the above rules, but their history did end with being slain by the Echoer. oSaC is not set in the real world so many key details are different, so please read the lore journals relevant to your backstory rather than coming up with something that would fit in, for example, the Warriors universe. We know there’s a lot of material to go through, so please feel free to join the Discord chat and ask for help! Our members and admins are well-versed in oSaC’s lore and can help you find what you’re looking for.

Finally, your character will not start in a profession, and will join as a “Survivor.” They will be placed in a profession based on their skills and interests once you’ve been accepted into the group and your character joins Haven.

We will be open for joining for 3 weeks! When you’ve finished with your application, please submit a join request to the group with the link to your application in the message. We may accept and reject applications throughout the three weeks and we may wait to decide on others or allow people to revise, but all will have responses by the deadline. After the deadline passes, no more revisions will be allowed, and applications will be either accepted or rejected. If you're accepted, you can begin to roleplay and participate in group events immediately.

We look forward to seeing what our prospective members come up with, and hope to see some new faces soon!

Last Day to Submit Applications: 9/1/20

The Echoer

Part 1 - Rally

"Cats of Haven, gather!"

The call comes from the Roost one morning, and Hopflight ensures that the word will spread even to those Haveners who have not gathered.

"Arno and his team have finished their trap to ensnare the Echoer, and it is time that we assemble our forces to slay it. For our strategy to work, we'll need volunteers who can come with us to defeat the creature in combat while it's immobilized. It may still be difficult and dangerous, so listen closely:"

"I'm looking for three types of volunteers.

"First, we'll need a Combat team, heavy-hitters who can attack the Echoer directly. Vanguards, Crafters from range, or anyone else who thinks that they'll be able to do direct damage to the creature and weather its attacks should it come free from the track.

"Second, we'll need a Ranging team, cats who are willing to make a blockade around the area to slow up the Echoer should it get free and to keep other Ashen at bay. The Ranging team will also be responsible for resolving any external threats or issues that may interrupt our battle with the Echoer. I'm looking primarily for Seekers and Espions for this task, but if you believe your skills allow you to do well in this you can volunteer even if not one of those professions.

"Third, we'll need a Support team, cats who are able to provide support by buffing and healing both other teams of allies. We'll certainly need it."

Hopflight paused, scanned the ground and gestured towards where one little Crafter apprentice was sitting. "Since Arno left, one Crafter has made it her duty to ensure that our forces are well-armed when they go to battle. Mio has crafted simple boomerangs, shortspears, and slingshots. Anyone who wishes to can claim one for this battle, but it will be returned afterwards as part of the communal stock. Speak to Mio if you want to rent one out for combat.

"You have four days to prepare, and on the fifth day we're heading out. Prepare yourselves, Haven, this will be a difficult battle."

The following objectives may be completed by any Havener who wishes to join this event, but must be complete by Saturday, 7/25/20 @ noon EST.

Objective: Volunteer!

The Monarchs are looking for volunteers to come to the Echoer battle. Submit a deviation of your character volunteering and what team they want to be a part of: Combat, Ranging, or Support.

Current volunteers:

  • Combat: Shatterbone, Frostflare, Ashenpaw, Doepaw, Briarflame, Tigershout, Flintpaw

  • Ranging: Bearheart, Mousepaw, Pebblepath, Flickerbloom, Trimpaw, Beanpaw, Powderkeg, Dreamwolf, Owlsight, Dark

  • Support: Oathspirit, Honeypaw, Kindleheart, Shellpaw, Swanflood, Dovepaw, Fallowsparks, Sootpaw

Objective: Arm Yourself!

Submit a deviation of your character receiving one of the following weapons from Mio:

Mio Echoer Weapons

Boomerang:

  • 1d3 base damage

  • Returns on a miss 100%

  • Returns on a hit 20%

  • Range: 15 feet

Shortspear:

  • 1d3+1 damage

  • Throwable at -20% precision

Slingshot:

  • First 3 shots: 1d3+2 damage

  • Ahots after 3: 1d3+1 damage

  • Range: 30 feet

Part 2 - Snag

Haven’s battle volunteers gather in the sandy hollow of the Tidal Delta, discussing strategy and making their last preparations before the battle. When the sun has reached its highest peak in the sky, the Monarchs return from their scouting.

“We’ve cleared a path for you,” Hopflight says. “I want everyone, in groups or two or three, to move out at five minute intervals. It’s a couple hour walk. You’ll be using different routes which Def and I will explain to you. You shouldn’t meet any major Ashen resistance, but steer clear of getting into a fight. If you have to battle something, do it quickly and with as little noise as possible. We don’t want the Ashen or the Echoer knowing about our setup.”

Hopflight and Def briefly explain the strategy. The Echoer runs on a flat “highway” that it can use to reach incredible speed. There’s one point where the highway crosses a river, where it turns into a ramp that the Echoer uses to leap over the water and continue down the path on the other side. Arno’s team has created a trap that looks like a roadkill corpse on the highway (apparently the Echoer hits Ashen and turns them into bloody messes) with ropes disguised as entrails hanging off of it. When the Echoer goes to make its jump, Arno will animate the rope to snare the Echoer by the ankle. Part of the rope also includes an enchantment that should silence it, though it’s uncertain how long it will last. The Echoer will fall and hang suspended in the river by its ankle, and by then Arno’s team will have blockaded the flow of water and turned the riverbed into a hardened battlefield. The Combat team will leap down to attack the suspended Echoer and try to bring it low. The Ranging team will scout the surrounding area including the river, the highway, and the dunelands and take care of any problems that might interrupt the fight. The Support team will be between the scouted area and the battle, looking for any cats who are in trouble and helping, healing, or evacuating them as necessary.

“That’s what we hope, at least,” Hopflight says. “If anything goes wrong, we’ll have to improvise.”

The walk is long, cats traveling in pairs or trios across the sandy wasteland, skirting small tidepools, cresting dunes flourishing with ashy dunegrass. Finally, the river crossing comes into view and the Haven cats hide themselves where they can find cover. Arno and his team busy themselves with setting up the trap. Arno swirls with his auma and summons each piece of his trap in turn, expertly placing them together on the side of the highway. He and his fellows turn to crouch in some brush right at the edge.

And then they wait.

Arno’s Proving team will play out a short session to execute the trap, then objectives will be released based on their success.

Part 3 - Echo

Arno's trap was a success! The Echoer's leg has been injured and it's suspended by one leg over the combat field. Syrin has led her team down to attack it. But it's already beginning to eat away at its silencing enchantment--its hordes will be on their way soon, and there may be more problems that keep the fight from going perfectly!

The rest of the event will be objective-based. If you have volunteered for a team, your team objectives are below! Note that for all submissions, you will be told how many rounds your action takes, so pay attention to that while keeping track of how long your buffs last!

Any submission count limits are per character, not per member.

Combat Objective: Attack the Echoer!

  • It’s suspended by its leg and flailing about as it tries to free itself. The creature is incredibly nimble, capable of jumping off of the very air itself to avoid attacks. Get as many attacks in as you can while it’s vulnerable! Each person can submit 1 thing per day. You can be a part of as many collabs as you want as long as they’re submitted by different people. When you submit a piece, anyone who participated in the collab should link it in the rolling chat and make a d100 roll to see if their blow lands. Be warned that if you have multiple pieces queued, they will be resolved in order, with no amendments if you get cold feet. If buffs wear out, that will be taken into account when resolving queued actions.

  • The Echoer has taken 208 Wounds

Ranging Objective: Scout

  • While the battle is commencing, Rangers can scout the river, the dunes, or the highway to look for anything that might interrupt the fight. Finding something will unlock new objectives. Not scouting may result in the Combat team having to fight new debuffs or obstacles. If you’re working on a scouting piece and someone submits and finds something before you, you can feel free to submit your scouting piece towards helping solve the problem so long as it was for the same location.

  • Rangers can only scout once a day, including collaborations, but if they find something while scouting they can submit to the new objective in the same day.

Ranging Objective: Dunelands - Slay the Opportunists - COMPLETE

  • Endura and Arno discovered that vyrmian were coming up from their holes and slinking around the battlefield. Until they are taken care of, any cat who goes down and is dying has a percent chance based on the number of remaining vyrmian of immediately being coup de graced and denied their death save.

  • Limited to 1 submission upload per day (you can collab multiple times so long as each character only has a total of 1 upload). You need a successful sensory or hunt check to find vyrmian. Under a 10 you slay no vyrmian. 10-20 you can slay a number of vyrmian as if you were slaying at half your auma. Over 20 and you can slay a number of vyrmian as if you were slaying with your full auma.

  • Vyrmian remaining: 0

Ranging Objective: River - Stop the Flood

  • Beanpaw has discovered that the wall of stone that Arno made to dam up the river isn't going to hold. The battle pit is quickly going to flood and sweep the battle team away, or at the very least make them lose whatever advantage they have against the dangling Echoer. Find a way to stave off the flood!

  • Limited to 1 submission upload per day (you can collab multiple times so long as each character only has a total of 1 upload). The flood will be a constant threat. Submissions will be able to stave off the time of flooding by a few hours to a day or more depending on the strategy, but will need to constantly be monitored and upkept.

  • Battlefield will flood: 8/8/20 @ noon EST

  • Digging out the Channel - 6/6 (completing this objective will add several days of time)

Ranging Objective: Dunelands - Divert the Hellions!

  • Vashti discovered a group of 4 hellions quickly making their way towards the battlefield. They must be either slain, driven off, diverted or distracted so they don't interrupt the battle, otherwise the combat team will have hellions in the pit with them alongside the Echoers.

  • No submission limit per day, but if you submit to this objective in one day you cannot submit to others.

  • Shellpaw is still dying in the Dunelands and the hellions may stumble across her. Any other cat who goes down in the Dunelands is also at risk.

  • Hellions remaining: 0

Ranging Objective: Highway - Hold the Line

  • Mousepaw has discoered that the Echoer's calls to the Ashen have brought them sprinting towards the battlefield. Hopflight and Def are fighting off the bulk, but they can't keep every Ashen from slipping through. Every day, each character will have a percent chance of being attacked by an Ashen who has come to aid the Echoer in battle. This percent chance can be lowered if the Ranging Haveners hold the line!

  • Haveners who choose to hold the line can participate in only that objective for the day, but can submit as many times as they want. Haveners can choose to slay Ashen (auma score rules apply), divert Ashen, or manipulate the terrain to their advantage, but may be attacked in turn. The mass battle is beginning, but the Echoer must almost be down by now, surely!

  • Submissions will lower the percent chance of attack by a certain amount based on your plan and your auma score. Certain triggered events and time passing will also increase the chance.

  • Current percent chance: -50%

Support Objective: Aid

  • Supports have no set objectives and no submission limit. They can submit to heal or buff and to support their allies as much as they want. They can technically submit towards any objective for the other teams if they wish and if they have something to do, but only once per day. Submitting to help with another objective will also expose them to risks and hazard chances of that team. Queued submissions will be resolved in order, without amendment, so be aware of associated risks.

Final Objective: Deathblow

  • The Echoer has shed its crystals and is trying to flee! Whatever Haveners are left are tasked with the chase. Land one more blow on it and end this fight!

  • Anyone from any of the teams can submit to this objective. Create a submission and roll a run check and an attack roll in the chat. If you miss, you can submit a new one immediately!

Part 4 - Burst

The beast is off, shedding the excess weight. It’s red eyes flicker and it’s an unfamiliar emotion. It’s not the joy of the hunt, or the fell cunning which has brought so many good cats low. It’s fear, a desperation for survival. If it can escape, if it can return to its lair and recover, it can start again. The loss of the auma is great but it can be overcome. It just needs to start fresh, to find a new place to hunt. Maybe the woods by the Haven, or the Spire. Yes, the Spire, linger there, range out, pass from the tunnels. If we just lay low, if we are cunning, if we-

There’s a brown blur the Echoer misses, a streak approaching it from behind. The cat races forward, outpacing its fellows. The Echoer is distracted while tumbling over vines that lash at its legs and the damned rope that ensnares its limbs. It’s caught up in thoughts for a fresh start, on new methods to kill, on what it’s learned of the Haven and how it can grow from this, grow to return a threat a thousand times more deadly. It doesn’t see the dame come to a stop, nor does it see her take steady aim. One eye closed as she steadies her heaving flanks, holding her breath so her trembling paws don’t disturb the borrowed weapon.

The slingshot looses and the iron bullet flies forward, dull beneath the sunless sky. It flies forward and catches the beast in the leg, the creature giving a hideous croak of surprise that’s cut sickeningly short as it drops, falling head over tail with sickening crunch after sickening crunch it’s lying thirty paces from where it was struck, limbs spasming, glowing eyes going dim.

Cracks form in the grey flesh, the Echoer’s lifeless body brimming with more and more energy. Colors burst from it, a light blue followed by a pink. The body degrades as a few other errant balls of light emerge and are lost. The body dims.

It then explodes into a myriad of colors, headed by a green aura, flickering in the form of a feline. Another green ball follows it, and a red, two balls of light that swirl and whirl about one another before rising higher and higher into the air, finally lost amongst the clouds. Some balls come out like firecrackers, losing bright sparks. Others sizzle along a foot or two before lying, heaving like beached fish before flickering into dust. Most of the fireflies of light glow brilliantly but quickly fade but the green one races off, leading several others off inland.

Hopflight and Def appear, sprinting through the remnants of the Ashen. Smaller sparks swirl around them from the Echoer's body, the lost auma of the Haveners who were struck in this battle. They return to their original owners, all Haveners recovering the auma that they had lost. Hopflight raises his head to the lights that streak their way east like fallen stars.

"We're following them!" Hopflight called. "Anyone who's still fit. Let's see where those stolen souls are going!"

The event will conclude over discord roleplay!

"Here are the tasks we've assigned for you, Haven!  Favor rewards for completion, and some of the more difficult ones might gain you auma."

The Quest board will update on the first of every odd-numbered month, so you will have 2 months to complete whichever quests you want for your character.  Each quest can only be attempted once per character; if you fail the quest, you cannot try it again.

Questing submissions can be any medium but they do have to be a complete and finished product.  Quality requirements for the most common kinds of submissions can be seen below:

  • Art: Lined and colored with a background.

  • Writing: At least 500 words with acceptable spelling/grammar

  • Roleplays: 500 words with acceptable spelling/grammar from each participant

Failure to meet these quality standards will either result in a penalty or an instant fail.

Challenges

Art- or writing-based challenged for you to complete, with no in-character risk. These can be done for characters who aren't currently in Haven.

Long Long Man Challenge

  • Description: create a comic or a writing piece using oSaC characters (or new characters in the oSaC universe) based on the Long Long Man commercials (entry is not required to be canon, this is a fanfic challenge)

  • Requirements: Comic must be at least 5 panels and writing must be at least 1,000 words.

  • Rewards: 1 auma to a character of your choice (can be completed once for every character you own). You can continue to complete more entries and gain +30 bonus favor each time.

Cover Challenge

  • Description: Create a book cover for oSaC as if it were a novel. You can choose to encompass all of oSaC as a whole or a specific arc as if it were one book in a series. Please include typesetting as you would find on a published novel (title etc.).

  • Requirements: This can be in any style but it must include an illustration of some sort, not just, for example, solid red cover with golden font. For writing-focus members, rather than a cover write a book blurb (back of the book or inside cover description) of oSaC as a whole or of a specific arc.

  • Reward: +1 natural bonus to a Knowledge skill of your choice.

Tasks

Simple tasks for completion. A passed skill check may offer bonus rewards. Unless otherwise stated, these quests are only available for characters in Haven.

This round of quests includes competitions for all of the different professions! For each submission, choose a skill that your character wants to focus on using for success and include in your description how they use that skill to succeed. Roll the skill check in the discord chat and include the result. Skill checks higher than 8 will be considered a "pass" for the purposes of skill training.

Each competition will also have a final winner who will get a special reward. Judgement will happen at the end of the questing period and we will take into account quality of your submission, creativity in succeeding in your task, and your skill check (how applicable the skill is as well as your roll).

Vanguard - Butchery Competition

  • Description: Slain Ashen are presented to each contestant. Each Vanguard may choose one type of Ashen and must disguise themselves as well as they can as that Ashen. They can only use pieces of the Ashen or components gathered from the Ashen in their disguise. It does not have to be size-accurate (so a Havener can dress up as a vyrmian with no penalty for being larger than a vyrmian). They can have as many corpses as they want to work with so long as they're all from the same Ashen. Any of the standard Ashen (except Ashen Warriors) can be used, but no unique Ashen.

  • Requirements: Create a drawing of your character's final disguise as well as a written description of their methods.

  • Reward: +15 Favor for entry, +30 Favor for a passed skill check.

  • Champion Reward: Admins will discuss what you want and you will be able to get a free piece of equipment (tools, armor, or weapons) of your choice. Some of the best materials will be off-limits but in general design and composition will be entirely up to you.

Espion - Battlefield Competition

  • Description: Craft a battlefield that Haveners can use in a battle against Ashen. An open area in Haven is presented for you. There are plenty of materials off to the side you can use and Projection-Class Haveners (NPCs) ready to sculpt your battlefield to your vision.

  • Requirements: A drawn map or illustration of your battlefield and a written description of the different landmarks or components and how they can be used. You can be as specific or vague as you want, though creativity in specificity will boost your chance of winning. You don't have to name individual Haveners or Ashen who will be fighting but you can if you wish.

  • Reward: +15 Favor for entry, +30 Favor for passed skill check.

  • Champion Reward: Choose between 10 bottles or a personal brewing tool of your choice.

Seeker - Pack Organization

  • Description: Haven is looking to improve Seeker packs! This competition will call for Seekers to make their most well-equipped Seeker pack. You can use any invented craft or tool, any herb, and can even theorize for tools that would be useful for Seekers to have that aren't invented yet (though if these are too vague they will count against your score).

  • Requirements: A drawing of your character's fully packed pack, using materials provided or stand-in materials for things that haven't been invented or aren't freely available. It must also include a written description of why your character chose each item to put into their pack.

  • Reward: +15 Favor for entry, +30 Favor for passed skill check.

  • Champion Reward: 1 Ultimate Scrap. This scrap creates 100% success and 0% plight chance on a single outing. This scrap will only apply to you and will not work if you try to take it on a patrol, but you may use it alongside other brokering scraps to find materials you want in the most dangerous areas.

Crafter - Shelter Crafting

  • Description: The Wastes can be dangerous, and it may be useful for Crafters to experiment with how they would create a shelter if their patrol is stranded away from a refuge. The Crafters must choose a location in the Wastes and will be offered ample amounts of all materials from that area to use. Using these materials, they must create a shelter that they believe would give them the best protection from Ashen.

  • Requirements: Draw your character's shelter and include a written description of how and why they decided to put it together.

  • Reward: +15 Favor for entry, +30 Favor for passed skill check.

  • Champion Reward: 1 personal crafting tool of their choice (i.e. anvil, worktable, etc).
